Services: Feasibility Studies, Space Planning, Planning

Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd operates in excess of 950 stores, of which over 400 are small format Sainsbury's Local convenience stores'. The Sainsbury's brand is built upon a heritage of providing customers with healthy, safe, fresh and tasty food. Quality and fair prices go hand-in-hand with a responsible approach to business.

Project Description:

Feasibility design and planning for a new Sainsbury's Local within an existing Grade II listed Art-Deco style station building, with an entrance directly off the main station concourse.  Arc worked closely with the client and a heritage consultant to produce a viable retail unit, whilst retaining the existing character of the listed building.

Key Challenges:

  • Stringent design constraints issued by Network Rail on the visual consistency of the facade.
  • Very small unit, so there were space constraints, particularly as the hot food section of the supermarket required a large preparation area.
  • Existing columns in the unit had to be retained due to Grade 2 listing and as such, the design of the sales area and back of house areas had to incorporate the columns.
  • Existing ornate ceiling had to be retained.
