The Gleed Girls CAL & Technology College provides education for girls aged between 11-16. It is an aspirational educational centre where young people are supported to achieve their full potential. It currently has a population of 800 students.

The post-16 centre is a mixed institution and will allow local students to be able to study at a higher level without travelling to far afield.

New build two storey building consisting of:

  • Drama studio
  • Server room
  • Common tech
  • Private study
  • Admin office
  • Connexions
  • Café
  • Kitchen prep
  • Business finance x2
  • Information technologies
  • Travel x2
  • Mezzanine study area
  • Seminar room
  • Private study mezzanine
  • Class room store rooms.

The building was of traditional brick construction with cladding and utilising glulam beams.

ESP Limited was engaged to carry out full design and consulting duties for the project from feasibility to completion and handover. 

Key Challenges:

  • Non standard building method required close co-ordination.
  • Design of natural ventilation system to fit in with already designed building.

Sustainability:

  • The scheme included natural ventilation and free cooling as part of the scheme to reduce energy and capital cost.
  • All room lighting benefited from daylight dimming as appropriate and incorporated absence detection to ensure energy was not wasted.
