The Governors of the Schools of the King Edward the VI in Birmingham - Refurbishment of Facilities

The Schools of the King Edward the Sixth consist of five grammar schools and have been educating children for more than a century. The schools offer an outstanding all round education and consistently achieve top positions in the national league tables. The Grammar Schools of King Edward the Sixth are Voluntary Aided schools.
Project Description:
The work comprised the construction of a new teaching kitchens block, including state-of-the-art demonstration room and associated mechanical and electrical installations. The contract also encompasses refurbishment works to the main school reception area, including new feature desk and lighting, and a major refurbishment of the 6th form common room.
The new teaching kitchen blocks are of traditional appearance with steel frame construction, brick/block cavity walls and standing seam roofing.
The 6th form common room is located on the first floor of an existing building. The refurbishment involved complex demolitions, extensive propping and structural alterations.

- Innovative energy efficient M&E installations within the teaching kitchens
Key Challenges:
- Constructing the kitchen block in the centre of the existing fully functioning school
- Completing the school reception during the summer shut down period
- Major structural issues for the 6th Form centre on the 1st floor of an existing block.
