Rutland County Council is England's smallest county. They have a very simple council structure that enables them to provide high-quality services to the community and operate in the most efficient manner. Some of the services provided include education, ecomonic development and the environment.

Project Description:

The construction of a new two form entry Primary school comprising classrooms and general school facilities, 2 special educational needs classrooms with associated facilities, 2 Nr dedicated Autistic Spectrum Disorder classrooms with associated facilities, pre-school nursery, community and family centre and hydrotherapy pool. The contract includes the provision and installation of all loose fittings and furniture, together with ICT infrastructure and equipment to provide a "turn-key" project. External works comprise new playing fields, MUGA, soft surface play areas, sensory area, natural habitat and educational wetland with dipping platforms.

Phased working employed to allow construction of the new school prior to demolition of the existing school and incorporation of external works. This phasing required the provision of temporary classroom facilities.

  • Light well shafts to maximise natural day lighting to internal enclosed areas.
  • Natural ventilation.
  • Solar hot water heating.
  • Photovoltaic cells.

Key Challenges:

  • Restricted Site.
  • Requirement for provision of temporary buildings for the decanting of school teaching spaces to be replaced. Including need for assistance with "move management".

Project Award:

Won the Sustainable Development of the Year award at the ProCon Leicestershire Awards 2011.

Form of Contract: NEC3 Option C Target Cost Contract with Activity Schedule procure using EMPA Framework Alliance.
