Hanover Primary School - Noel Road, Islington,

Hanover Primary School is a community school, which means that it is financed by public money and managed by the Local Education Authority, which also sets the admission requirements.
Project Description:
ESP was appointed by Balfour Beatty to undertake the design services on the scheme for Islington borough Council.
The scheme was a new build and refurbishment project to improve educational accommodation and motivation of staff and pupils. The project comprised new build extension to provide "sports" hall to the school plus complete refurbishment and re-modeling of the existing Victorian brick 3 storey school. ESP was engaged for full M&E design intent and consulting duties from feasibility stage through to project handover to D&B contractors.
Sustainability:
- Air source heat pumps were utilised.
Key Challenges:
- There were significant planning issues regarding the new building position and height of the hall. There were also restrictions placed upon the scheme because of the limited scope of works that were allowed to the grade 2 listed fabric of the building. Both of these issues required engineering input to resolve satisfactorily.
- The scheme was for the complete replacement of the existing building services (lighting, power, ancillary services, heating, cooling, water services, ventilation and drainage) within the constraints of the listing and configuration of the building whilst at the same time complying with applicable standards.
