Derwenthaugh Waste Recycling Centre - Graphite Resources Limited

Graphite Resources offers steam autoclaving as an effective solution for the safe treatment of waste - a vital future resource in helping manage the 'carbon economy'. Graphite Resources is committed to innovating the process of waste management today for a better tomorrow.
Project Description:
The project comprises the construction of a waste recycling plant, the first of its kind in Europe for Graphite Resources Limited. The site is located off Derwenthaugh Road, Blaydon, Gateshead and is constructed on a brownfield site.
The site has received planning permission and has been developed as a Biological and Mechanical Treatment facility (BMT) that incorporates a Steam Sterilization and Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) to treat a range of non hazardous commercial and industrial waste for steam sterilization and produce a stabilised waste stream with subsequent separation.
The site will receive an average of 320,000 tonnes per annum of municipal solid wastes (MSW) and non hazardous commercial/industrial (C&I) wastes for steam sterilization and segregation into recyclable materials. The site has also be designed to handle an average of 140,000tpa of separated materials from segregated kerbside collections, civil amenity sites and skip wastes operations.
These materials will be segregated further into recyclable components for bulking, baling and transfer off site to produce a total 'eco-solution'.
Procured via a negotiated partnering arrangement, the project team also comprises the process engineers and contractors to ensure a seamless solution to the construction process.
The gross floor area of the main buildings is circa 9,000m2 with a total site area in excess of 20,000m2.
Henry Riley's appointment, apart from the feasibility, cost plan and design issue elements, involved protracted but successful value engineering and contractual negotiations with the parties. A heavy emphasis was placed on payment terms, bonding, protection for advance payments (particularly specialist process plant) and finally compliancy with the Debt Banks stringent policies. On site consultancy covered valuation, payment and variation final account management and certification.
Sustainability:
- Reclamation of a brownfield site.
Key challenges:
- Detailed contractural, warranty and bonding negotiations with funding banks.
- Incorporating ground breaking technology into planning permitted building design.
- Agreeing risk / reward matrix with contractor.
