Granta Housing Society is a charitable housing association with over 2,600 homes in all six counties of the East Region. Granta builds affordable rented housing, low cost homes for sale and key worker accommodation for sale or rent. The Society is also a major partner for social and health care agencies, providing accommodation for vulnerable people requiring care and support.

Project Description:

Primes Close in Barrington was a mixed development on a rural site consisting of 14 dwellings, in a mixture of six 2/3 bedroom semi-detached houses, four 1 bedroom flats and four 2 bedroom chalet bungalows, with a combination of affordable rent and shared ownership tenure. The external areas include communal gardens, storage sheds, paved parking, a covered cycle store and planting schemes integrated with the rural environment.

Sustainability:

  • BREEAM Multi-Residential "Very Good"
  • Extensive biodiversity habitats introduced
  • Highly insulated timber frame system

Key Challenges:

  • Working adjacent to existing dwellings and using same access road
  • Planning requirement to improve river frontage including new cutting and planting of reeds to encourage otter habitats
  • Adjusting drainage for new and existing dwellings due to incorrect placement of existing infrastructure
